Geo-Caching: Place-Based Discovery of Virginia State Parks and Museums
Gray, Howard Richard
Journal of Museum Education, v32 n3 p285-291 Fall 2007
The use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units has exploded in recent years along with the computer technology to access this data-based information. Geo-caching is an exciting game using GPS that provides place-based information regarding the public lands, facilities and cultural heritage programs within the Virginia Parks and Museum system. This place-based learning activity has two components: GEO for searching a specific place or geographic location and CACHE for the process of selecting information to cache, or store. Each cache provides visitors with a wide variety of information-based rewards: Visitors may utilize GPS coordinates to find unique rock formations, locate wildlife or vegetation areas, access museum amenities, print guides and maps, find area attractions, locate emergency information, etc. The basic idea is to encourage individuals and organizations to: (1) set up information caches within local public areas and (2) share the GPS locations of these caches on the World Wide Web. Finally, it represents a unique program funding source from a public-private partnership. (Contains 9 notes.)
