Connecting with Girls, Connects Them to You: Toward a "by Girls, for Girls" Approach
Schoenberg, Judy
Prevention Researcher, v12 n2 p18-20 Apr 2005
Today there are 14 million girls ages 11-17 in the United States. The growing population of girls clearly represents a new opportunity for youth development organizations to reach out and engage them. In its continuing commitment to develop program options to meet the needs of girls today, in 2001 the Girl Scout Research Institute conducted one of the largest national research initiatives with girls ages 11-17 ever undertaken by the organization. Through focus groups, surveys, and interviews, over 3,000 girls (a sample comprised of 75% girls at-large and 25% current Girl Scout members) from varied locations, races/ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds shared their hopes and dreams and what's important to them in programs for youth. The findings are reflected in the Girl Scout Research Institute report, "The Ten Emerging Truths: New Directions for Girls 11-17)." This article highlights the key findings from "The Ten Emerging Truths" research.
