A Functional Syntax of German.
Fichtner, Edward G.
Students in intermediate language courses, especially conversational courses, can benefit from a simple set of instructions for combining words and phrases into sentences. A description of the basic concepts determining word order in German--the fundamental sequence of clause elements, the "infrastructure," and the movement rules by which the various forms of the finite clause may be generated, i.e., declarative sentences, direct and indirect yes-no and information questions, and noun clauses after "dass and ob"--are presented. This model is then expanded to include the common adverbs "auch, gern, immer, mehr, nicht, nie, noch, and schon" singly and in certain combinations. An examination of several problems of negation in German which arise from contrasts with their English counterparts is included. (Author/MSE)
