This handbook draws from Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory and explains it through a teacher- and student-friendly acronym: SMILIES (Strategy, Musical, Intrapersonal, Linguistic, Interpersonal, Exercise and Environmental, and Spatial). The handbook helps teachers explore innovative techniques to teaching reading and writing. According to the handbook, each letter in SMILIES represents one of Gardner's eight intelligences and inspires teachers to target the intelligence with fun and clever approaches. For ease of use, the handbook is divided into three parts. Part I covers all the critical components of literacy and connects them to the SMILIES acronym. Part II provides a plethora of activities for each of Gardner's multiple intelligences. Finally, Part III offers practical advice for creating lesson plans and assessing students' reading and writing skills. All three sections include ready-to-use blacklines. (NKA)
