Academic Performance of L.A.C.C. Transfers Entering the University of California During the Academic Year 1975-1976. Research Study #77-8.
Gold, Ben K.
This study reports the performance of former Los Angeles City College (LACC) students who transferred to the University of California (UC) during the 1975-76 academic year. Results of the study showed: (1) 250 former LACC students transferred to UC in 1975-76 and of these, 15% were eligible to have entered UC from high school compared to 41% of community college transfers statewide; (2) differential academic performance of LACC transfers as measured by grade point averages was slightly above that for all community college transfers (-.37 and -.40, respectively); (3) of those transfers attending UCLA (90%), 85% chose majors in the College of Letters and Science, 8% in the College of Fine Arts, and 7% in Engineering, with those in Fine Arts earning the highest grade point averages; (4) male performance at UCLA was generally superior to that of females; (5) 54% of the grades earned at UCLA were A's and B's while 10% were D's and F's; and (6) comparison of grades earned in various departments at UCLA by LACC transfers revealed highest average grades in foreign languages and lowest average grades in economics and physics. Eight tables of academic performance data are included in the report. (JDS)
