Exploring the Third World: Two Interdisciplinary Units for Advanced Placement English.
Traubitz, Nancy; Pfetsch, Cheryl
Developed to enhance students' cultural awareness of Africa and the Far East, this guide contains both interdisciplinary and specific content curriculum materials for two course units in Advanced Placement English. These units were designed to (1) communicate the countries' rudimentary geography and history; (2) introduce the value systems, culture, institutions, and aesthetics of the Third World; and (3) teach students to work knowledgeably with the large numbers of Third World students in the school system. The objectives, procedures, products, and evaluation are outlined for each unit. Among the instructional materials included in the Far East unit are definitions, a horticulture project, a slide show guide, worksheets and unit tests, an assignment on the identification of Far Eastern influences on Western artists and poetry, Indian English prose and poetry with discussion questions, a worksheet on the Imagist school and review of literary genres, and narrative/drama as a literature mini-unit. Among the materials included for the African unit are an assignment dealing with mythic patterns in the literature, history, and art of the culture; readings of novels set in Africa; worksheets dealing with a field trip to the Museum of African Art; a slide show; "praise" poems; a comprehensive unit test; and maps, worksheets, and poems.
