A Student-Designed Grammar Quiz on the Web: A Constructive Mode of Grammar Instruction
Fukushima, Tatsuya
Educational Media International, v43 n1 p75-85 Mar 2006
The World Wide Web has frequently been incorporated into second/foreign language (L2 hereafter) course instruction during the past decade. However, many teaching methods essentially employed it as a reactive mode of L2 instruction. Many other methods have been designed to facilitate constructive L2 production. They are, however, limited in their effectiveness for learners of higher proficiency levels. This article discusses a course project at a US university wherein students produced a Japanese grammar quiz on the World Wide Web. In this project work the students employed a CGI script to produce a simple yet well-designed web site consisting of multiple choice questions and CGI-generated answers with concise explanations. Pedagogically, the process of web page production not only generated a high level of motivation among the participants but served as an effective review of L2 grammar rules in a constructive mode. Additionally, with appropriate content adjustment, this process is easily replicable in L2 courses for learners at all proficiency levels.
