This unit for U.S. history courses examines a number of questions raised by U.S.-Cuban relations beginning with the Spanish-American War of 1898 and ending with the missile crisis 64 years later. These questions are on such topics as the appropriate U.S. stance toward a nationalistic reform movement, a social revolution, and a military build up in Cuba by an extra-hemispheric power. At the unit's center are simulations of two focal events in U.S.-Cuban relations: (1) the Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961, and (2) the missile crisis 18 months later. Lessons preceding these two simulations trace fundamental U.S. foreign policy making toward Cuba from the 1826 declaration of the Monroe Doctrine on. The unit then offers students the opportunity to apply what they have learned about the questions raised by revolution and intervention in Cuba to the Dominican crisis of 1965. The unit concludes by asking students to review the history of U.S. policy toward Cuba in order to prepare an essay advocating the predominance of one of three underlying motives that notable historians have ascribed to the United States policymakers. This document consists of a summary of chapter activities to serve as a guide for teachers, a section of teacher directions for each chapter with an overview, objectives, materials, and procedure, and a section of student reading for all 10 chapters.
