The Time Is Now: Empowering Educators to Examine and Address Race in Their Classrooms
Flanagan, Candra
Journal of Museum Education, v42 n1 p22-31 2017
Race is a social construct with a powerful impact on individuals and our society. Understanding the impact of race and racism in our educational settings is crucial to the betterment of our students and our future. This article discusses the role of museums to empower educators to engage in direct conversations about race within the school environment--both amongst adult peers and especially with students. Rooted in the adult learning theory of transformative learning, the National Museum of African American History and Culture outlines one method, a five-day summer institute, which it utilizes to prepare educators to have courageous conversations in their classrooms.
