Finding Community: Helping Children of Military Families Succeed
Gomez, Daniel P.; Ybanez, Cindy
School Business Affairs, v78 n4 p10-12 Apr 2012
Envision the military family, being given as few as 30 days to pack, take their children out of school, leave their residence, settle in a new home, enroll the children in a new school, and take care of the myriad details for the military parent's relocation or deployment. Military families undergo this process over and over. The moves can affect all family members adversely, but they are hardest on the children, regardless of their ages. Transitioning to a new school means, in essence, starting all over again. Numerous studies have shown that transitions can have negative affects on students, including declines in achievement, decreased motivation, lowered self-esteem, and increased emotional stress. A study by the U.S. Department of Defense found that children who are highly mobile, such as children of military families, can exhibit signs of regression, a fear of separation, and sometimes aggression. Older students can be rebellious and have a higher risk of using drugs. Without intervention, these issues can lead students to drop out of school. This article discusses three areas--"emotional maintenance," "military opportunity," and "psychological first aid"--wherein educators can provide encouragement and support.
