Lessons for Middle School Teachers from the Film "Thirteen"
Conway, Morgan Brooks; Vermette, Paul
Middle School Journal (J3), v38 n2 p37-42 Nov 2006
The movie "Thirteen" examines the lives of two middle school girls on their journey to ultimate destruction. "Thirteen" is a frightening look at the main characters' downward spiral as they plunge into a dangerous world of drugs, alcohol, sex, and "blowing off" school work. This article presents a discussion by a counselor educator and a teacher educator that focuses on the psychology behind the characters' destructive journey. These two educators also demonstrate how teachers and other school professionals can spot these type of destructive teens and get them the help they need.
