Reflections on Meeting the Needs of Children with Disabilities in Ethiopia
Kurtz, Kimberly M.; Shepherd, Terry L.
Journal of International Special Needs Education, v14 n1 p22-31 2011
In many countries, children with disabilities seldom receive the educational services they need. Economic instability has often forced a reduction in services for children with disabilities. Cultural values have also impacted support for children with disabilities. A special education residential facility in Ethiopia that serves orphaned children with disabilities was examined. Results from this study provides readers the opportunity to gain insight into another culture; to gain knowledge into perceptions regarding individuals with disabilities in Ethiopia; and to increase awareness of services provided to children with special abilities and needs in Ethiopia. Ideas for applications which can be applied to multicultural education in the United States, are discussed.
