A Critical Review of Erickson's Readings in Educational Organization and Administration.
Charters, W. W., Jr.
In this review of Donald A. Erickson's book, "Educational Organization and Administration," the author focuses on what Erickson calls a "paradigm shift" in research and in the conceptualizations that undergird research. Erickson argues that research should be concerned primarily with productivity in the educational system, and he views productivity as student outcomes (or achievement). The reviewer takes issue with Erickson's position that only conditions that make a difference in student outcomes are appropriate for research. He asserts instead that organizational structure and process, even though these elements may not be directly related to student achievement, are equally valid areas for researchers to investigate.
