Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science, GEMS: A Science Outreach Program for Middle-School Female Students
Dubetz, Terry A.; Wilson, Jo Ann
Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research, v14 n3 p41-47 Jul-Sep 2013
Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is a science and math outreach program for middle-school female students. The program was developed to encourage interest in math and science in female students at an early age. Increased scientific familiarity may encourage girls to consider careers in science and mathematics and will also help develop better informed scientific citizens. GEMS utilizes an all-female staff consisting of faculty, undergraduate and graduate students directing and implementing the science activities. The all-female environment provides female role models and mentors for the middle-school students. All activities are hands-on and incorporate teamwork and problem-solving. Middle-school teachers are encouraged to participate, leading to the development of partnerships between the university faculty and middle-school teachers.
