Tips from the Trenches
Garofalo, Denise A.
Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship, v24 n2 p138-139 2012
Branding and the idea that ebooks are still essentially books are important concepts to keep in mind, especially when confronted with all there is to oversee and consider in the arena of electronic resources; it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the torrent of change and the intricacies of the business. The author states that electronic resources librarians must understand, document, assess, transmit, and inform others about the different aspects and impacts of licensing and access, such as the budgetary and legal considerations, of acquiring and maintaining access to digital and electronic resources. These processes are quite complex, and vendors and publishers do not provide their information in any uniform, standard fashion, further complicating the situation. Add in the concept of the provision of resource sharing, and the topic becomes downright unfathomable, with vendor agreements seemingly prohibiting a basic facet of library service. There is much that needs to be addressed and resolved with e-resources. This transitional phase of implementation can be confusing and frustrating as educators attempt to incorporate new formats, delivery methods, and access into their existing services, framework, and collection goals. In this article, the author considers access and resource sharing and discusses how to find the information being sought. A list of references and further reading is included.
