The Priority Country Area Program is a Rural Education Program funded by the Commonwealth Schools Commission and jointly administered by the Queensland (Australia) Department of Education and the Queensland Catholic Education Office. The program develops educational strategies to address problems engendered by the social and geographical nature of particular rural areas rather than particular schools. This publication lists approximately 145 Local Area Initiatives funded in 1986. The directory is organized geographically into four regions (Central, Northern, Northwest, and Southwest). Projects are then listed by region under three broad headings: curriculum extension projects, project materials and resources, and excursions/travel/camps. Most entries include the name of the submitting body, project title, a brief description, and comments regarding special activities and participant reactions. Curriculum projects include music, drama, dance, literature based reading, art, audio-visual, and computer activities. Materials and resource projects include acquisition of playground, video, computer, photographic, and athletic equipment. Excursion/travel/camp programs provide isolated students and teachers with opportunities for social interaction and stimulation and include regional sports days, camps, visits to other schools, workshop transportation, etc. (NEC)
