System for Integrating Reading Into Content Areas (SIRCA): An Earth Science Application.
Keimig, Ruth Talbott
This document examines a system for integrating reading into the earth science curriculum. Such topics are examined as to why the earth science curriculum can benefit from reading program participation, competency based instruction in content courses, reading/thinking competencies in earth science, assessing reading competency in earth science, diagnostic and instructional process, prerequisite activities, instructional strategies, conceptualization of reading, remediation through earth science, and reading objectives in content courses. It is concluded that student, parent, and teacher reaction to System for Integrating Reading Into Content Areas (SIRCA) has been positive, as has students' growth in earth science. SIRCA has brought the reading specialist into meaningful participation within the mainstream of school life. (TS)
