Evaluating User Participation and User Influence in an Enterprise System
Gibbs, Martin D.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Does user influence have an impact on the data quality of an information systems development project? What decision making should users have? How can users effectively be engaged in the process? What is success? User participation is considered to be a critical success factor for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects, yet there is little empirical support for such an assertion. Variations in the operationalization of terms and in study methodologies have presented a challenge to research in determining correlations between user participation and system success. An ERP presents unique challenges to an organization given its complexity. It has the power to provide integrated data to organizational decision-makers and aid in better decision making. If the data is corrupted, untimely, or inaccurate, it threatens the strategic standing of the organization. An important question that must be answered is whether user participation in an ERP has any benefit to the resultant information of an ERP. This study approached these questions from a phenomenological standpoint and was able to answer in the affirmative: User participation and user influence have a positive relationship to information satisfaction with human resources (HR) information. The data retrieved from this study is rich and varied and is both empirically sound and accessible to researchers and practitioners.
