Yaqui Parent Education Demonstration Project. Final Report.
de Campoy, Antonia
The Yaqui Parent Education Demonstration Project was founded in 1975 with the aid of Maricopa County Head Start in Guadalupe, Arizona, to help foster the continuation of the Yaqui language, history, and culture. With a 1-year grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare/Office of Child Development, organizers hired a coordinator, part-time staff, and six trainees. In the course of the year, the staff and trainees successfully researched Yaqui materials; provided consultant opportunites to community members; implemented a home-based education program; developed cultural concept and language materials to be used by preschool children and interested families; circulated a monthly newsletter; hosted three Yaqui cultural fairs; developed a Yaqui recipe booklet; provided presentations on Yaqui customs to various organizations; initiated an art supply fund for community artists; initiated summer youth classes in Yaqui history, culture, and language; and developed instructional materials including traditional costumes, monthly newsletters, slides, cultural flashcards, exhibition items, and dolls. The report contains nine sample lesson plans; sample vocabulary lists in English, Spanish, and Yaqui; four illustrated booklets containing short stories, animal pictures, number lessons, and recipes; participant evaluations; newspaper reports of the project, and administrative forms.
