Resolving ethical dilemmas is no easy task, and there are no ready-made recipes or guidelines to follow. A principal, as a critically thinking individual with a well-thought-out belief system, will be challenged to think on his or her feet when confronting situations that require ethical decision making. This article presents three ethical decision-making approaches that can help principals reach a more informed and carefully analyzed decision before taking any action. The three approaches to decision making are (1) the Rest model; (2) the five principles of ethics; and (3) the 12 questions. The Rest model is a practical decision-making model based on "moral reasoning and an ethic of care" that attempts to help people understand and predict moral behavior and decision making. The five principle of ethics are highlighted by Beauchamp and Childress (1979): (1) respecting autonomy; (2) doing no harm; (3) benefiting others; (4) being just; and (5) being faithful. On the other hand, the 12 questions are based on a model that addresses ethical dilemmas. These questions are asked before making a decision or taking any action. This article also presents a survey of principals on making ethical decisions which revealed that their instinctive decisions sometimes did not reflect the best course of action.
