Dental hygiene students' perceptions of themselves and the "typical dental hygienist" were assessed in relation to feminist attitudes at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Dempewolff's (1972) 56-item Feminism II Scale was administered to all first-year, second-year, and post-certificate dental hygiene students. The scale covers political, intellectual, and economic spheres and focuses on questions of competence, privileges, responsibilities, and leadership for women. Data gathered on perceptions of self and the typical dental hygienist were analyzed using 3x3x3 factorial repeated measures analysis of variance, which also assessed interactions among the variables of educational level, grade point average, and age. For the 198 students, no significant differences were found for the independent variables of age, level, or grades. It is suggested that female dental hygiene students are inclined toward opposition of the feminist movement. It is proposed that dental hygiene curricula are not enhancing dental hygiene students' feminist attitudes, curricula should incorporate women's studies courses and consciousness raising, and dental hygiene educators should assess their feminist attitudes in order to serve as effective role models.
