Morning Exercise
Schmitt, Natalie Crohn
Schools: Studies in Education, v3 n2 p51-62 Fall 2006
In this article, Natalie Schmitt recalls her teaching experiences with morning exercise programs, beginning with her first teaching job as assistant Morning Exercise teacher at the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago. In the Morning Exercises, students were encouraged to employ all means of expression: speaking, drawing, dancing, singing, acting. Morning Exercise entailed learning by doing, expression, and the integration of body, mind, and spirit. Schmitt describes some of the exercises she remembers using. They all entailed some kind of drama or staging and were all derived from literature, social studies, and the arts. She recalls one Exercise in which students in a math class sang about square roots. Every subject provided material for Morning Exercises. The early, exceptionally well-documented Morning Exercises at Parker reveal that they were replete with methods of play development and presentation that preceded professional theatre experiments, some of them by many decades.
