Research Summaries
Brock, Stephen E., Ed.
Communique, v38 n5 p22-23 Jan-Feb 2010
This column features summaries of research articles from 3 recent crisis management publications. The first, "School Shootings and Counselor Leadership: Four Lessons from the Field" summarized by Kristi Fenning, was conducted as the result of the increased demand for trained crisis personnel on school campuses. Survey participants were leaders chosen from four North American school shooting sites who were interviewed to gain an increased understanding of their crisis experience. The second report, "Effects of the WTC Attack on NYC Public School Students," summarized by Martha J. Rosen, is a preliminary report on the psychological difficulties persisting among New York City public school children 6 months after the 9/11 attacks. Specific questions included rates of exposure to the attacks, the prevalence of probable psychiatric disorders, risk factors for these disorders, and children's need for and use of mental health services. The third report, "Pre-attack Symptomatology and Temperament Predict Children's Responses," summarized by Chiharu S. Allen, examined the indirect impacts of catastrophic events on children who "witnessed" the events through indirect exposures following terrorist attacks. The authors examined the psychological responses of 151 children (ages 9-13) in Seattle, Washington, approximately 2-9 weeks as well as 6 months after September 11, 2001. (Each summary is individually referenced.)
