Employers require pristine drawings that convey clarity and precision for the production of goods. Can a change in sequence of instruction be expeditious and help teachers better prepare their students for the workplace? Research suggests that combining traditional drafting and computer-aided drafting (CAD) instruction makes sense. It is analogous to having students make change from a cigar box before operating a computerized cash register. Based on the author's experience, teaching traditional drafting first and CAD next is the best sequence for teaching visualization of orthographic and pictorial drawings to an introductory drafting class. Alternating the teaching of orthographic and pictorial concepts produced no significant learning difference for the average and above-average student. However, teaching pictorial drafting first to special education and learning-disabled students resulted in their grasping width, height and depth relationships more quickly than teaching orthographic drafting first.
