Toward Equity: An Action Manual for Women in Academe.

Nearly 150 exemplary programs and policies at colleges and associations that promote sex equity in postsecondary education are described that are also adaptable to other settings. Thirteen short essays on the basics of change are also presented. The sex equity programs included those directed to students and staff, those designed to improve the social-educational climate, and those that promote sex equity in the community. The types of exemplary programs and policies, the number of programs in each category, and one program/policy in each category are as follows: admissions (3), Alverno College Minority Achievement Program; continuing education (5), Goucher College re-entry program for women; financial aid (5), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, scholarships for returning women students; women's studies (8), Towson State University Women's Studies Program; integrating the new scholarship on women into the traditional curriculum (9), Montana State University Project on Women in the Curriculum; centers for research on women (4), Wellesley College Center for Research on Women; nontraditional courses and programs (16), College of William and Mary Women in Business Programs for Students and the Community; student development (10), University of Kansas women's recognition and the women's hall of fame; counseling (9), Loyola University of Chicago's promotion of equity for Hispanic students; women's centers providing support services (9), University of Minnesota Women's Center; child care (2), Hunter College Child Care Center; health care (4), Purdue University health awareness month; campus safety (2), University of Delaware support group for victims of sexual offense; staff employment (5), Denison University National Availability and Employment program; staff professional development (13), City University of New York Mentorship Program for Minorities and Women in Educational Research; tenure and promotion (3), Rutgers University's academic review and promotion of faculty in rank; compensation and fringe benefits (3), Hood College salary equity reviews and making the information public; subtle discrimination (4), Project on the Status and Education of Women on the chilly classroom climate for women; sexual harassment (3), Arizona State University Sexual Harassment Survey; dissent, mediation, and grievance (4), Massachusetts Institute of Technology special assistants to the president; commissions on the status of women (4), University of Maryland, College Park, Chancellor's Commission on Women's Affairs; information and communication (6), University of Denver Departmental Liaisons Program; community-based programs for women (3), Jersey City State College photography exhibit and study in oral history; and collaboration between postsecondary institutions and elementary/secondary schools (4), University of Arizona programs for elementary and secondary school teachers.
