Results from a qualitative component of a mixed-methods research design are reported regarding the use of humor in pastoral ministry. Thirteen Southern Baptist (SB) pastors were interviewed, from a total of 37 exemplars identified in the quantitative component of the study, regarding their perspectives toward humor in ministry. Results overall showed the pastors to unilaterally agree that wit is essential for successful ministry, but with caveats. These include the following principles: avoid politically incorrect comedy, guard against unintended missteps with ministry humor, and do not use humor at others' expense. The results are discussed in the contexts of everything-in-moderation, generating meaningful feedback systems, viewing humor as a craft to be cultivated, and relating the study's findings to previous research literature.
