College of DuPage District 502 Educational Needs Assessment (Total Sample Summary).
Rice, Gary
In spring 1987, the Gallup Organization conducted a telephone survey for the College of DuPage (COD) in Illinois to determine community perceptions of the college's role in the community; community awareness of COD and its competitors; perceptions of current college services; importance of factors in selecting an educational program; interest in attending an educational program; obstacles to attending COD; vocational and career interests; sources of information about COD; preferred delivery systems, schedule, location, and format; and rating of COD on various factors. Survey findings, based on responses from 1,513 District 502 residents, included the following: (1) the functions rated as most important for community colleges were "prepare to transfer" and "provide vocational training," though half of the respondents saw COD as a place to earn transfer credit and only 13% saw it as a place to obtain a two-year college occupational degree or certificate; (2) 43% of the respondents indicated that some member of their household had taken courses at COD; (3) the most frequently given reason for choosing COD or one of its competitors was "convenient location"; and (4) 66% of the respondents indicated that career-related continuing education was important to them.
