Pharmacy Program Review. Consultant's Report.
Gibson, Robert D.; And Others
Site visits were made by a team of consultants to Florida A&M University (FAMU) and the University of Florida (UF), the two institutions providing pharmacy education in Florida, to review programs and assess issues relating to entry-level degrees, manpower needs, and delivery systems. After a brief history of academic programs in pharmacy, the doctor of pharmacy degree is described. The history of both the FAMU and UF programs are recounted, and specific recommendations are offered to each institution. On a systemwide level, the following recommendations are made: (1) for reasons related to economics, curriculum, and standards, it is in the best interests of the two colleges to each offer only one entry-level professional degree; (2) the Pharm.D. should be the sole entry degree program due to level of clinical training, professional competition, depth of study, and new practicing requirements; (3) both FAMU and UF should prepare plans to phase out the baccalaureate program in pharmacy; (4) further studies are needed to project state needs for pharmacists; (5) any real expansion of programs should be curtailed until the need is documented. Appended are the consultants' vitae, national data on enrollments, and standards of practice for the pharmacy profession. (LB)
