Two Faces of Outdoor Adventure Leadership: Educational Adventure Programs and Guided Trips
Ewert, Alan; Wu, Guan-Jang
Journal of the Wilderness Education Association, v19 n1 p12-18 Spr 2007
Outdoor adventure activities such as whitewater boating, caving, rock climbing, and mountaineering continue to be popular among the public. As a result of this popularity, numerous organizations "contract out" the leadership and delivery of the adventure portion of their curriculum. This paper explores two widely used venues for offering outdoor adventure programs--Guided Trips (GTs) and Educational Adventure Programs (EAPs)--as well as examining how these two venues differ in scope, client expectation, and leadership preparation. Within this context, differences and similarities are discussed regarding GT and EAP experiences, including levels of risk, consequences, required technical certifications, decision-making factors, and programming issues such as goals and objectives, and group size.
