In the upper-level communication seminar that the author teaches--"Practices of Citizenship"--students learn and reflect on multiple theories and practices of citizenship as they develop their own voices in civil, academic, and intellectual conversations. As Aristotle argues, citizenship is a practice, a habit that must be learned. Aristotle's focus on personal investment and motivation are essential characteristics of his model of citizenship, and serve as both the underlying theory and rationale behind the activity that the author calls the "Symposium on Citizenship." In it, over the course of the semester, students plan, organize, promote, and host a one-day symposium focused on citizenship. This paper describes this activity and discusses how the symposium allows students to translate classroom readings into actual practices of citizenship, to identify different models of citizenship, and to forge connections between their own ideas about citizenship and examples shared by others.
