Neither Damned Nor Doomed: Educating Children Prenatally Exposed to Drugs and Alcohol.
Shedlin, Allan, Jr., Ed.
Thousands of children exposed prenatally to drugs are now of school age, presenting schools and educators as well as social service agencies with enormous challenges. This book provides information from education, medical, public health, and social service experts on the degree of damage these children have sustained, whether that damage will be long-term, and what interventions can help them grow into healthy, contributing citizens. It includes research findings, model school and clinic-based programs, and an agenda for action. Following an introduction by Allan Shedlin, Jr., the articles are: (1) "Prenatal Exposure within the Context of Children in Today's Society" (Kati Haycock); (2) "Myths and Realities: What Do We Really Know about the Effects of Prenatal Exposure to Drugs and Alcohol?" (Deborah Frank); (3) "Recognizing the Meaning of Motherhood for Women in Treatment and Recovery" (Michele Shedlin); (4) "Some Observations from the Front Lines" (Rachelle Tyler) a pediatrician's view of the social needs of drug-exposed children; (5) "A Framework for Evaluating Children Prenatally Exposed to Crack" (Steven Merahn); (6) "Project Daisy: A Regular Education Project for Children Prenatally Exposed to Drugs and Alcohol" (Diane Powell); (7) "Project Healthy Choices: Building Stronger Voices" (Eileen Wasow and others); (8) "The Women and Infants Program: The Family in Focus" (Kathleen Fitzgerald); (9) "Reframing the Debate," on the need to shift away from the "victim" mentality (Mark Rapoport); and (10) "Stop the Research, Start the Work" (Eric Brettschneider).
