The Big Read: Middle School Style
Findlay, Christine
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v23 n7 p24-26 Mar 2007
In this article, the author relates how she helped organize the Middle School Community Read project, a community reading project for middle school students in her school district. The project aimed to reverse the trend of a community experiencing loss of male readers as they become teens. First, the author and her group formed a small committee with a teacher and three middle school library media specialists. For their reading project, they also invited local celebrities to read chapters from the book "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen to model the idea that reading is fun. They also planned four evening events such as Rock Climbing, Survival 101, Walking the Native Path, and Backpacking for students and their parents.
