From very early in its history, the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE) has supported a rich tradition of critique. This chapter argues, however, that in important ways, the magnitude and rapidity of social transformations since the late 1970s have largely overwhelmed the critical capacities of Canadian adult educators. In particular, drawing on recent work by Boltanski and Chiapello (2005), the author suggests that critical adult education in Canada has been one-sided. Contemporary social forms have primarily been criticized for the ways they generate inauthenticity or deepen cultural forms of oppression (described here as "artistic critique") than for the ways they deepen poverty or enhance egotism ("social critique"). As a result, the relationship of adult education to some of the most serious harms generated by recent forms of network capitalism remains insufficiently explored.
