Adapting Computer Resources to School Communication Needs.
Cleveland, Clem
The benefits that the microcomputer offers the school district--and the district's public relations office in particular--are significant and should be taken advantage of. Although microcomputers increase the already large amount of information available to administrators, they also enable the user to select and coordinate information efficiently. Postponing computer purchases while waiting for conclusive product refinement is a mistake. The district could be saving money and gaining expertise while waiting for improved products. In addition, the value of used equipment is remaining fairly high, so replacing equipment with improved products does not represent a great loss. Among the advantages of microcomputers in the public relations office are reductions in district typesetting costs ranging from 40 percent to 60 percent, more effective use of press releases by newspapers, more thorough surveying and analysis of survey data, and effective day-to-day control over school finance campaigns. Other uses include word processing for all writing functions, obtaining access to computer-based information networks, and performing numerous accounting processes. (PGD)
