The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has made no secret of its desire for teachers to introduce more creativity into UK classrooms. Imaginatively minded teachers have found a number of ways to introduce creativity into the classroom. Dance, music, problem solving and role-play exercises are all well trodden routes, but it was the topic of collaborative learning that really got the author thinking--not just collaboration between classes and year groups, but shared learning experiences between pupils across the world. In this article, the author reports that Gateshead City Learning Centre (CLC) has just completed an exciting pilot project run by the Australian Children's Television Foundation (ACTF) in which it has been collaborating with schools in New Zealand and Australia through Kahootz, a revolutionary software package that gives pupils access to virtual 3D worlds where they can write stories, develop ideas, build animation sequences or develop games and puzzles. The great thing about this project is that each student has been provided with a global audience for their work. The motivation has surprised all of them at Gateshead CLC and the shared stories, incidental learning and knowledge transfer that have occurred when the pupils engage and challenge each other have been an absolute joy to watch. They have been creative and active learners rather than passive consumers of information.
