Body Piercing...: Is It an Art Form?
Vieth, Ken
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v106 n9 p10 May-Jun 2007
Body adornment and decoration have long been a part of human history. Cultures around the world have found ways to add elements to the human form to enhance beauty. Recently the author has noticed an increase in body piercing and tattooing. He finds himself, as an artist/teacher, asking if there is an aesthetic element he might be missing. In this article, the author reflects on his personal experience as an observer of body piercing. For him this experience created several questions. In today's art world aesthetics plays an important part of what defines art. Somehow the participants make the decision of what is aesthetically attractive or not for themselves. This subjective reality leads the observer to make the same evaluative decision for themselves as well. In the end, it is up to each person to decide if body piercing is an artistic expression or an art form.
