Testing. Occasional Papers 21.
Culhane, P. T., Ed.; White, J., Ed.
Five papers on testing in English as a second language are included in this volume. "A Preliminary Diagnostic Test for Adult Immigrants" by Johan I. Arthur presents the first stage in a project to develop a test for limited English speaking adults in the Colchester, Essex area. "An Initial Testing Battery on a Course for Air Traffic Controllers" by C. Townley presents a description of that battery as well as a transcript of the tests themselves. In "Proposals for a Proficiency Test for Use on Pre-Sessional Courses," Lewis Kerr sets forth a test battery design suitable as an initial entry test for a pre-sessional course for foreign graduate students. Characteristics of the students are described, and the advantages and disadvantages of discrete item tests and integrative skills tests are weighed. In "Testing Communicative Competence in English as a Foreign Language with Students of Natural and Social Sciences," S. McDonough outlines reasons for the development of a new oral production test, and describes and analyzes a test procedure using graph material. Finally, K. Robinson, D. Rekart, and R. Daniloff offer "A Proposal: Use of Analysis by Synthesis to Investigate Naturalness of Second-Language Pronunciation," as a step in advancing the testing of foreign language pronunciation. (JB)
