Brief descriptions are provided of 39 activities funded through the Virginia Community College Institute for Instructional Excellence, including efforts to adapt and/or modify a teaching practice developed by a colleague or documented in the literature (funded by Adapter Grants), to develop and implement innovative teaching practices (funded by Developer Grants), and to plan and stage workshops focusing on instructional issues relevant to community colleges (funded by Regional Instructional Workshop Grants). Abstracts are presented for activities including innovative approaches to instruction in drafting and design; systematic thinking; study skills; observational skills; English as a second language; writing; gerontological nursing; accounting; heavy equipment operation; statistics; creative thinking; general biology; geology; note taking; natural science; computer programming; study strategies; advertising design; developmental writing; theater arts; human anatomy; and music. In addition, descriptions are provided of the regional workshops, focusing on the brain, creativity, and computers; online searching; mathematics; computer assisted instruction in the health sciences; industrial automation education; cross-disciplinary literacy; and international/intercultural programs.
