The reports of two innovative approaches to overcoming education problems in the isolated, sparsely populated areas of Western Australia are presented. Established in 1974, the Isolated Students Matriculation Scheme has combined traditional forms of correspondence education with a curriculum development unit and the development of mechanisms to facilitate personal contact between students and tutors, as exemplified by the resident orientation camp in Perth. The courses in English, history, economics, human biology, mathematics, technical drawing, and art have been prepared to satisfy matriculation requirements. In the long term, these courses could also provide options for schools in larger population centers, making individualized study by senior students possible. The Chidley Education Centre, founded in 1976 in Perth, has provided residential remedial and psychological services for those rural children who develop acute learning problems because of their isolation. The involvement of parents has been an important function of the Centre as well as recent participation by local teachers and principals working to provide a smooth transition upon return to the home environment.
