Architecture is a versatile, multifaceted area to study in the artroom with multiple age levels. It can easily stimulate a study of basic line, shape, and various other art elements and principles. It can then be extended into a more extensive study of architectural elements, styles, specific architects, architecture of different cultures, and different purposes for buildings. In this article, the author describes a lesson inspired by an early childhood book, "Thinking with a Line" by Cathy Weisman Topal, which she adapted to the fourth-grade level. This lesson gives students a relevant review of line and shape building, incorporates the study of the art elements with the study of architecture, allows students to experiment with new materials for printmaking, incorporates an awareness of recycling, and provides a meaningful opportunity for students to be creative in inventing their own buildings using lines and shapes.
