The purpose of this study was to identify and compare educational needs and goals during deployment and nondeployment of spouses of active-duty Army service members. The sample consisted of spouses of active-duty military service members from the Army brigades who had recently returned from a deployment or who were experiencing a deployment rotation. A cross-sectional questionnaire was used to gather data that were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The sample was most commonly 25-35 years of age, female, with a bachelor's degree as the highest degree, with two children younger than 18 years of age living at home, not currently enrolled in an academic program, and married to an active-duty Army service member for 6-10 years. The current study findings showed how a spouse's military career impacted educational attainment of the spouse. Findings in the study showed that most respondents believed that their spouse's military career made it more difficult for them to (a) enroll in and complete an educational program during deployment and (b) attend classes or complete assignments during nondeployment. Participants also reported that the most common barriers they faced during their spouse's deployment were home chores and responsibilities, inadequate financial resources, and a need to care for their children. Additionally, deployment status significantly affected type of educational need but not educational goal of the respondents. Based on the study's findings, it is recommended that spouses of Army service members be routinely surveyed to identify their needs. The Army should develop, monitor, and adapt education-assistance programs to meet these needs. In addition, the Army could collaborate with colleges and universities to make course offerings more suited to the family member of Army personnel.
