Community among African American Students on Small, Predominantly White Campuses: The Unforeseen "Minority within a Minority" Experience
Journal of American College Health, v53 n4 p192 Jan 2005
Sixteen African American students participated in semi-structured, open-ended interviews about their experiences at small, predominantly white colleges in the Appalachian region. Two main themes emerged from the interviews: community among minorities and minority within a minority. The students described community among African Americans on campus as ranging from a close-knit family to, in some cases, mere association. A number of students mentioned a lack of closeness between African American men and women, especially stemming from interracial dating by African American men. Some students felt that they were a minority within a minority due to being nonathletes. Having lighter or darker skin also contributed to whether one felt like a minority within a minority.
