Designed to provide an overview of the range and quality of services provided by the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS), this annual report focuses on the 1986 activities of APLS; the state's public library directory and statistical report will be published separately. A discussion of the activities of the Library Development Division includes Children's Services and the 1986 Summer Reading Program; the 1986-1990 long-range plan; grants, including state aid, monies received from the State Educational Bond Issue, and Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) Titles I, II, and III funds; scholarships awarded; and networking activities. Overviews also highlight the activities of the Operations Department; the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, including the regional collection, reader services, reader recruitment, the reader population, reader usage of library materials, the volunteer program, and working relationships with other organizations; the Data Processing Department; and the Public Relations Department.
