Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management Intervention Buffers Distress Responses and Immunologic Changes Following Notification of HIV-1 Seropositivity.
Antoni, Michael H.; And Others
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, v59 n6 p906-15 Dec 1991
Randomly assigned 47 asymptomatic, healthy gay men to cognitive-behavioral stress management condition or assessment-only control group 5 weeks before notification of human immunodeficiency virus antibody status. Individual difference analyses suggest that psychological buffering and immunomodulating effects of treatment may be attributable, in part, to relaxation skills learned and practiced or to general willingness to comply with intervention guidelines.
