Animals, Kids & Books: A Guide for Putting Humane Books into the Hands of Children.
Freedman, Barbara
This guide for choosing humane children's books (i.e., books in which animals are not eaten, expolited, or treated with cruelty) presents reviews of over 100 books for children up to age 7. Both subtle and blatant examples of animal exploitation portrayed in children's picture books are examined. Reviews are grouped into 3 categories: kind books, nice books, and cruel books. The section on cruel books cites various categories of books and specific titles to avoid, based on the author's vegetarian-oriented opinion of what constitutes cruelty. An adult reading list is included that lists 12 books on various aspects of animal welfare and refers readers to various animal protection organizations for further information. Although most books were published between the 1960's and 1980's, many selections are older books that are widely available today. The document concludes with an updated supplement containing 25 additional books reviewed since January 1983. (LH)
