Chinese Dragons in an American Science Unit
Lew, Lee Yuen; McLure, John W.
Art Education, v58 n4 p6-12 Jul 2005
Can art and science find a happy home in the same unit? We think the answer is yes, if the central problem interests the students and allows them to try out multiple abilities. The sixth-grade unit described in this article, which we called "The Dragon Project," grew mainly from two roots, a study of ancient China and a later probe into anatomy and physiology. The host institution was Ross School, located in East Hampton, New York. This campus-style exploratorium is noted for its interdisciplinary studies based on a humanistic core of world cultures. By "interdisciplinary studies" we are referring to problem solving that uses input from several subjects in a way that interests students more than traditional methods and content do (Walker, 2003). In this unit, aesthetics fueled the problem solving. (Contains 5 figures.)
