Celebration Time: Black History Month
Pinkney, Andrea Davis
School Library Journal, v54 n2 p32-37 Feb 2008
Nowadays, more students, teachers, and librarians are aware of African-American History Month and try to give it greater attention. However, the author questions herself if people do really "celebrate" African-American History Month or is it just something folks feel obligated to do, so they "celebrate" by displaying a collection of books about notable African Americans and hope that by some magical force of attraction people will pick up the titles and gain true appreciation of their vast contributions. The author feels that teachers and librarians are missing a great opportunity for young people to really "celebrate" African-American history in a fun, engaging, intriguing way. In this article, the author presents a brief history of the Black History Month. She also shares several ideas for celebrating the African-American History Month.
