It has been argued that schools are trapped in a print-based past, while their students inhabit a nonprint-based age, and that this has accompanied a shift from traditional mass media to media driven by computer technology. This article draws on the work of Stuart Allan to examine some of the history of this shift in term of news and asks what such a shift might mean for our teaching of news as part of media studies. It addresses the issue of new/small media in the form of streaming technology, and examines its potential for classroom use, drawing on the "frames" model developed by Mark Howie. In particular it asks what are the implications when digitally streamed news shifts us along a continuum from consumers to producers of news? (Contains 3 tables and 5 notes.)
