This training manual presents current information about alcohol abuse and alcoholism among minority populations. It is designed to aid counselors employed in alcohol abuse programs. Areas discussed in this report include: interpersonal communication, knowledge of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, evaluation and assessment, planning, referral, counseling and treatment. Specific topics addressed include physiological, psychological, and sociological/anthropological approaches to alcoholism, resources, public relations, vocational rehabilitation, legal aspects, instructional planning research, and funding resources. Strategies for training counselors and implementing treatment and/or prevention programs which are relevant to the needs of minority group alcoholics and alcohol abusers are also outlined.
