The Use of Geometry and Proportional Reasoning Techniques at the US Department of Agriculture
Farnsworth, Ralph Edward
Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications: An International Journal of the IMA, v25 n1 p1-10 Mar 2006
This paper discusses the use of geometry and proportional reasoning techniques used at the United States Department of Agriculture by two of its branches: the Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This paper discusses the agricultural agency and two branches involved, details a seven-lesson geometry module for high school sophomores using proportional reasoning techniques observed at these branches, and examines the results of the field-testing of the module. Mathematical modeling, open-response questions, and direct student involvement in the mathematics are essential elements. Student outcomes, a timeframe, student profiles, the module's actual lesson format and topics, methodology, assessments, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards addressed by the module, materials and equipment needed, final results and reactions of students and teachers are included.
